Did You Know?
Wood is central to almost everything a beaver does. They use it to build dams and lodges, create underwater food stores, and feed on the bark and softer layers beneath. Their favourite trees include willow, aspen, birch and poplar. Their teeth are extraordinary — iron-reinforced, constantly growing and self-sharpening as they gnaw. A beaver can fell a surprisingly large tree in a matter of minutes. But the really remarkable part is what happens next: beaver dams slow water flow, wetlands form, biodiversity increases, and habitats appear for fish, frogs, insects, birds and mammals. They don’t just use the environment — they rebuild it. Ecosystem engineers, powered by trees.
