A dice is supposed to be perfectly fair. Every face equal, every roll truly random. But make one from wood — with all its grain, knots and natural quirks — and suddenly fate has a little more character. Which feels about right for a bird box.

Ours is handcrafted in our Yorkshire workshop, mounted at a jaunty angle with dots carved in and the entrance hole sitting where the five would be. Not perfectly symmetrical. Not perfectly fair. But full of charm, warmth and a story worth telling.

Wooden dice are one of the oldest gaming objects ever found. Long before plastic, people were carving them from wood and bone — rolling them in taverns, using them in rituals, letting them decide their fate. Some of the earliest known dice date back over 5,000 years to ancient Mesopotamia. The Romans were particularly fond of them, and dice have been found on archaeological sites across the ancient world. There’s something wonderfully human about the idea that for millennia, people have been holding a small piece of wood and trusting it to decide what happens next.
